The History Of Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussaud was a real person born in the 1700s in France. She worked as a housekeeper for a doctor who made wax models to illustrate anatomy, which is who she learned the art of creating wax figures from.

She started creating wax models of famous figures and gained popularity. By the 1800s, she had a collection of wax figures she featured in an exhibition in London. From there, the collection grew in popularity. Today there are 23 Madame Tussauds worldwide.

About Wax Figures

Before the wax figures are created, the model has more than 250 measurements taken to ensure the wax figure will look realistic. It can take up to 2,400 pounds of wax to create a wax figure, depending on the size of the model. The wax figures are made two percent larger than the real person because wax shrinks during the creation process.

The wax is poured into a mold for the model to start creating the wax figure. Many intricate, handcarved details are added, along with makeup and hair to bring it to life.

Most wax figures are made from paraffin wax, but some parts of the figures are made from beeswax.
