How Different Waxes Benefit Cosmetics and Personal Care Applications

Whether you manufacture cosmetics, personal care products or both, microcrystalline and paraffin waxes offer several unique benefits.

    Microcrystalline Wax

Microcrystalline wax is derived from crude oil and is produced during the de-oiling process. It has non-straight chain components and a fine-grained crystal structure. This wax offers a high melting point and, depending on the grade of the wax, it can have either a soft or hard texture. It can also vary in color, with shades ranging from yellow to brown.

These properties make microcrystalline wax ideal for blending cosmetic and personal care ingredients to make them either thicker, harder or more flexible. This wax helps deliver color uniformity, making cosmetics and personal care products visually appealing. If your products incorporate other waxes and oils, microcrystalline will easily work with them.

    Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax, like microcrystalline wax, is produced from the petroleum production process. It’s most commonly produced by chilling and then separating the waxy portion from the oil. It has very large crystalline structures and a low melting point. There are two main types — low and high melt point — and these can range from a soft to solid texture.

In cosmetics and personal care products, paraffin wax dissolves easily into the skin, delivering moisture and a protective barrier. Because it is odorless and either white or translucent, it works well in products that already have colors or are scented.

Different Applications of Wax in the Cosmetics Industry

Both waxes are used in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care applications, including:

    • Baby products
    • Eye and face makeup
    • Balms and lipsticks
    • Foundations
    • Shampoos
    • Fragrances
    • Skincare
    • Sunscreen and suntan products
    • Nail care

Paraffin works well for dry, irritated skin because it penetrates and moisturizes both the skin and hair. This is why it’s often used in body lotions as well as hair conditioner and masks. Microcrystalline wax is ideal for binding and providing structure in products like styling waxes.

Overall, these two waxes can be used any time you want to:

    • Add shine to products.
    • Keep a product solid.
    • Increase the stability of products.
    • Improve a product’s texture.
