Did you know wax is a common ingredient found in many beauty products? Learn about the types of wax found in your favorite lip products:
Depending on the brand and type of lip balm, a variety of waxes are used to create the product. Beeswax lip balm is popular because it contains natural emulsifiers that help retain moisture.
Vegan lip balms are also available. They use plant-based waxes. The most popular plant-based wax for lip balms is carnauba wax. Carnauba wax is used to thicken the lip balm and provide a glossy finish.
All the different wax types used in lip balms make them easy to apply and protects, softens and soothes chapped lips.
Microcrystalline wax is commonly used in lipstick. This wax helps the lipstick keep its shape. Since microcrystalline wax has a high amount of oils in it, it can also help keep the creamy lipstick from sweating.
Like lip balms, many lipsticks contain lanolin and beeswax to give the product a waxy feel and moisturizing properties.
Since carnauba wax has a high melting point, it is added to many lipsticks to prevent it from melting easily.
Lip gloss gets its shine from emollient oils. Most formulas use lanolin derivatives or polybutene (a silicone-like hydrocarbon). Waxes are added to lip glosses to give them thickness to help them stay in place on your lips. Ozocerite wax, which is a type of paraffin wax, is commonly used.
