What Is Duck Wax?

Duck wax is a specialized blend of paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. While duck wax is a type of paraffin wax, it’s important to remember that not all paraffin waxes are duck wax.

Duck wax always contains microcrystalline wax. The microcrystalline wax enhances the blend’s adhesive properties, making it easier to fully remove all the little feathers from a bird. A bird waxed with duck wax will be smooth and clean. Conversely, a bird waxed with only paraffin wax will have some feathers remaining, which will need to be removed by hand.

Blended Waxes produces food-grade duck wax that complies with FDA regulations (21 CFR-178.3710 and 21 CFR-178.886). With proper care and cleaning, our wax can be reused multiple times, making it a cost-effective and efficient choice for your operation.

Benefits of Using Duck Wax

When it comes to processing ducks, geese, or other poultry, using the right duck wax can save you time, reduce labor, and improve the overall quality of your finished product. While defeathering machines can be costly and hand-plucking is slow and inconsistent, duck wax offers a reliable, food-safe, and cost-effective solution.

Why Choose Duck Wax?

  • Cleaner plucking: Birds molt, meaning they lose feathers from time to time. Pinfeathers are small developing feathers found on their bodies. Since pinfeathers are tiny, they can be trickier to remove unless you have the right wax. Duck wax’s adhesive properties help it grip pinfeathers and pluck them out in one swoop.
  • Faster process: Since duck wax grabs more feathers the first time around than other types of wax, the plucking process moves much more quickly. Waxing a bird is also much faster than plucking it by hand.
  • Simplicity: If you want to wax a duck or other bird, all you need to do is dip the bird in the melted wax, cool the wax and then peel it off. As you peel off the hardened wax, the feathers will come away with it.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Duck wax costs a lot less than a defeathering machine. It also takes less time than hand-plucking a bird. Plus, you can reuse the wax after each plucking as long as you clean it to remove feathers and other debris.
