Being a mineral wax, montan wax is a mixture of hydrocarbons with deposits of rock, salt, coal or petroleum. Germany produces the most montan wax in the world. California is the only U.S. montan wax producer, but it still only produces a small amount in comparison to Germany.

What Is It Used In?

Montan wax is used in a number of materials and products, including plastics. It is a high-performance additive in the plastic industry and is extremely popular in the engineering field. It’s used as a lubricant to help with technical tasks. It is also a coating and polishing wax for pharmaceutical applications. Additionally, montan wax is used to add strength to lipstick and thicken the oils in cosmetics and personal care products.
