Why You Should Use Cheese Wax

Breathability

Cheese wax is breathable, so it allows for the exchange of gases to properly age the cheese. Other popular cheese aging methods, like vacuum sealing, cut off the air flow to the cheese. No air flow means the cheese will age differently.

Time

Cheese wax makes the coating process easy. Plastic cheese coatings can be messy to use and can take up to eight hours to dry completely. Cheese wax hardens quickly, so you can store your cheese wax creation and start the aging process faster.

Removal

Cheese wax protects the cheese while it is aging, but when it is time to eat the cheese, it is easily removed. Unlike plastic coatings, cheese wax is easily peeled away using just your hands.

Shape

Cheese wax keeps the cheese’s shape intact. Alternative cheese coating methods, like vacuum sealing, can cause pressure on certain spots on the cheese, resulting in dents and bumps on the cheese’s surface. Maintaining the cheese shape is especially important for cheese cutout designs.

Color

Cheese wax comes in a variety of colors. The color of wax can signify the type of cheese that is inside. Black and red cheese waxes are the most popular. Typically red cheese wax signifies cheddar cheese is inside. Aged cheeses are typically coated in black cheese wax.
