What You Need
To apply cheese wax, you’ll need your cheese creation, cheese wax, a container for melting the cheese wax and a thermometer to monitor the wax temperature.
Melting The Wax
First, you’ll need to melt the wax. Use the container, thermometer and a heat source to melt the wax. Remember to melt it in a an adequately ventilated space. Use personal protective equipment, including gloves and safety glasses, when melting the wax.
Keep a gradual heating rate while you melt the wax by monitoring it with a thermometer. Once it is melted, keep the wax temperature constant. Melted wax should stay between 160°F and 170℉. Continue using your thermometer to monitor the wax temperature while dipping the cheese.
Preparing The Cheese
Before dipping the cheese in the wax, it is important to remove excess moisture. Pat the cheese with a lint-free cloth before you dip it.
Dipping The Cheese
Hold the cheese wheel on one side and dip half of it in the melted wax. Hold it in the wax for a few seconds to allow the wax to properly adhere to the cheese. After a few seconds, lift the cheese out of the wax and allow the excess to drip off. Set the half-covered cheese wheel down until the wax hardens.
Once the wax hardens, dip the other half of the cheese into the melted wax. Follow the same steps.
After the wax on the second half of the cheese hardens, your cheese is ready to be stored to age!
